Coláiste Iognáid, also known as "the Jes," has a long history dating back to the 1620s when the Jesuits first established a presence in Galway. In 1859, the Bishop invited the Jesuits to establish St. Ignatius College, which operated until 1926. In 1929, the school was re-established as Coláiste Iognáid. While the school maintains its Jesuit ethos, the staff is now primarily composed of laypersons.
