Business Description

Ennis Friary is a 13th-century Franciscan friary located in Ennis, Ireland. Founded by the O'Briens, the ruling family of Thomond, the friary is known for its impressive 15th/16th-century sculptures carved from local hard limestone. The nave of the friary features a carved image of St. Francis displaying the stigmata, while an elaborate tracery canopy from the late 15th century can be found under the south arch of the tower. The corbels supporting the canopy are adorned with carvings of a bishop and the Virgin & Child. An arch between the nave and transept holds an image of "Ecce Homo" or "Christ's Pity", depicting Christ bound with tokens of the crucifixion. The chancel is illuminated by a magnificent east window with five tall, narrow lancets. The friary also includes the sacristy, an impressive structure with a ribbed, barrel-vaulted ceiling, which was later used as a courtroom after the suppression of the monasteries. The cloister area, with a partially reconstructed arcade, can be accessed from the sacristy. Ennis Friary is a popular historic site known for its Gothic tower, wall carvings, and vaulted sacristy.
