Business Description

The Cathedral Church of St Edan is an Anglican cathedral in Ireland dedicated to Saint Aidan. The cathedral has a rich history, with the first Christian settlement in Ferns being a monastery founded by Aidan in the early 6th century. The original monastery was burned down by Vikings in 930, but it was later refounded as an abbey in 1158. The medieval cathedral, which served as the historical seat of the Diocese of Ferns, was consecrated to Aidan in the 1230s. It was built on the site of the original monastery and features a cruciform plan. The cathedral suffered damage during the Elizabethan period and was partially rebuilt, but it was fully reconstructed in 1817. The current bell tower and chapter house were added during this time. The cathedral is adorned with various ornaments and furniture, including a stained glass window depicting Saint Patrick, installed in 1931 in memory of Thomas Brownell Gibson, a former rector of Ferns. Additionally, there is a gisant of a bishop believed to be Bishop John de St. John of Ferns, and a baptismal font located in the southwest corner of the nave.
