Business Description
Carlow Castle is a historic landmark located in County Carlow, Ireland, near the River Barrow. Built between 1207 and 1213, it is considered a National Monument of Ireland. The castle is believed to have been constructed by William Marshal the elder and is the first towered keep in Ireland. It deviates from traditional castle designs with its lack of a towered curtain, gate house, and undivided great hall. The inner castle had three storeys and thick walls, with timber used for the upper levels. Throughout its history, Carlow Castle changed hands multiple times, including being taken by Oliver Cromwell in 1650. In 1814, the castle was heavily damaged during attempts to convert it into a lunatic asylum. Today, only the outer face of the west wall and two neighboring towers remain as ruins.
