Carlow County Museum is a local-history museum located in Carlow Town, Ireland. Housed in the former Presentation Convent, the museum is part of a complex that includes the Tourist Office and the County Library. Operated by Carlow County Council in association with the Carlow Historical & Archaeological Society, the museum's role is to collect, preserve, conserve, document, and display the history and material culture of the county. The museum showcases various unique items, including the famous 19th century hand carved pulpit from Carlow Cathedral, which has been featured in the book 'A History of Ireland in 100 Objects'. Other notable exhibits include the original gallows trapdoor from Carlow Gaol, the wooden smoking pipe of Captain Myles Keogh, and the remains of the last cigarette smoked by Kevin Barry, a medical student executed in 1920 during the Irish War of Independence. The museum also features a stained glass panel depicting a Carlow narrative of the 1916 Rising, created by artist Peadar Lamb. Located in the Cultural Quarter of Carlow Town, the museum is surrounded by other cultural institutions such as the Visual Centre for Contemporary Art & The George Bernard Shaw Theatre, Carlow College, the County Library, the Cathedral of the Assumption, and the Carlow Courthouse. Admission to the museum is free, and it is open all year round.
